Stepping Toward Spring – Senior Walking Program

SIGN-UP NOW! Then join us at the Kick-Off
event on Wednesday, January 7th at 1:00 pm.

The Village of Glendale Heights Parks and Recreation Department will be running a 10-week walking program beginning Wednesday, January 7th and ending on March 18th with a celebration, including food, drinks, awards and raffle prizes! The program is free and available to all Village residents, age 62 or older. Of course, gym shoes or walking shoes are the preferred footwear for the program.

Benefits of Walking
Walking promotes physical activity, boosts brain power, assists in weight management and may lead to reduced insurance costs by preventing and managing several chronic illnesses. Walking as little as 30 minutes a day, five or more days a week can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis and some cancers.

How do I know how far I have walked?
Each participant will be given a pedometer to count the number of steps taken each day. All participants will be shown how to properly use their pedometer at the kick-off event on January 7th. We will also cover goal-setting and how to track your progress.

Group vs. Individual
It’s up to you. Do you like the social interaction of a group walk, or do you prefer to walk alone? The choice is yours! To help you reach your goals, organized group walks will be scheduled throughout the program.
