Completed in September 1991, Safety Town is a summer program designed to acquaint children with safety practices using verbal instruction, reinforced with visual aids and physical application. It consists of a classroom, pond, miniature buildings, streets, sidewalks, and a railroad caboose. Safety Town is a cooperative effort by the Village departments, the Glenside Fire Protection District, businesses and residents, using a minimum of Village funds. 95% of the cost was raised through donations of cash, materials and labor.
Safety town classes are scheduled to resume in June, 2008.
The program consists of five two-hour classes for children ages 5 through 7 (children must be 5 years of age by the time their first class starts.) Topics to be covered are Pedestrian Safety, Railroad Safety, Fire Safety, Stranger Danger, 911, First Aid and Poisons, Bike safety and Seat Belts.
